Edition #020 | PURPOSE | Owning the Vision | March 20
You overestimate what you can build in a day. And you completely underestimate what you can build in a decade.
You get fired up on a Sunday night and write down a massive list of goals. By Wednesday, you are behind schedule, exhausted, and feeling like a failure. You assume the problem is your work ethic. It is not. The problem is your timeline. You are trying to squeeze a ten-year build into a six-month sprint.
Here is the tool that fixes your timeline.
Let's get into it.
1 PRINCIPLE
PURPOSE
The Decade Horizon
The Decade Horizon is a mental model that forces you to stop optimizing for Friday and start building for the future. Most people quit good paths because the short-term results are too slow. They switch majors, drop out of programs, or change jobs every eight months looking for a faster payoff. But real wealth, real skill, and real character do not compound in months. They compound in decades.
Picture an oak tree versus a weed. A weed shoots up out of the dirt in a matter of days, but the first heavy rain washes it completely away. An oak tree spends its first few years doing absolutely nothing visible above ground. It is driving thick roots deep into the dirt. When the storm hits, the weed is gone, but the oak tree does not even bend. The oak tree is operating on a decade horizon.
What are you building right now that will actually matter ten years from today?
1 VERSE
Habakkuk 2:2-3
"Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time. It speaks of the end and will not prove false."
The vision is not meant to be fulfilled the second you write it down. It requires an appointed time to mature.
1 VOICE
Jim Collins
Jim spent years researching why a handful of companies achieved historic greatness while their competitors collapsed. He found that the winners did not rely on lucky breaks or overnight trends. They committed to a slow, methodical build that compounded over a very long timeline.
"Greatness is not a function of circumstance. Greatness is largely a matter of conscious choice."
That is not a motivational quote. That is an architectural blueprint. You do not stumble into a great life by accident. You choose to build it one quiet decision at a time.
1 CHALLENGE
The Decade Letter
Take fifteen minutes tonight and write a letter to the version of you ten years from now.
Do not type this on your phone while watching television. Sit down with a physical piece of paper and a pen. Describe exactly the life you want to be living and the specific character traits you want to possess. Fold it up and put it in your wallet. That is your baseline for the decade horizon.
Hit reply with the word DONE when your letter is written.
Keep it Real Deal.
