Edition #016 | COURAGE | Owning the First Move | March 16
Nobody goes first without shaking. Not the entrepreneur asking for the first check, not the athlete taking the first shot, and not the person making the hard phone call. They all feel the fear.
We have this idea that courageous people are fearless. It is a lie. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the decision that something else is more important than the fear.
The people you admire are not fearless. They just learned how to take that first, shaking step anyway. There is a name for that move.
Let's get into it.
1 PRINCIPLE
COURAGE
The Threshold Step
The natural response to fear is to freeze or to run. Your brain tells you to wait until the fear goes away before you act. But the fear never goes away on its own. The only thing that quiets the fear is action. The Threshold Step is the one, specific move that takes you from thinking about something to actually doing it. It is the moment you cross from the safety of the idea to the risk of the arena.
Picture standing at the edge of a cold pool. You can stand there for an hour, debating how cold the water will be, testing it with your toe, trying to get comfortable with the idea of jumping. Or you can just jump. The Threshold Step is the jump. The shock is temporary. The indecision is what freezes you.
What is the one step you have been avoiding?
1 VERSE
Deuteronomy 31:6
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you."
The command is not "do not be afraid." The command is "be strong and courageous" even while you feel the fear. Your action is not based on your feelings. It is based on the promise that you are not going alone.
1 VOICE
Ryan Holiday
Ryan has spent his career studying the lives of the most resilient leaders in history. He found that every single one of them, from Roman emperors to modern entrepreneurs, dealt with intense fear. They were not braver than anyone else. They just had a better system for acting anyway.
"Courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting in spite of it."
That is not just a cool quote. It is an operating manual. Stop waiting to feel brave. Start practicing the skill of taking action while your hands are still shaking.
1 CHALLENGE
The Threshold Step
Today, you are going to take one Threshold Step. Identify the single action you have been avoiding because of fear.
It might be sending the email, making the sales call, or having the honest conversation. Do not plan to do it tomorrow. Do not wait until you feel ready.
Take that one step today. Cross the threshold. That is the rep.
