
I used to have a great elevator pitch. Thirty seconds, tight, polished, hit all the right notes about revenue and results and growth. People would nod and say "wow, impressive." And then they'd forget me within an hour.
You know what people actually remember? The person who said something they believed in so strongly that it caught them off guard. Not a pitch. A conviction. "I believe young people deserve real mentorship, not motivational posters." That's not an elevator pitch. That's an identity statement. And it sticks because it's real.

1 PRINCIPLE
IDENTITY
Your identity is not your resume. It's your reputation when you're not in the room.
There are two versions of you. The one you present and the one people describe when you leave. Most people spend all their energy polishing the presentation and zero energy thinking about the description. But the description is the one that opens doors, closes deals, and builds the kind of trust that compounds over decades.
What do people say about you when you're not there? Not the polite things they say to your face. The real things. "That kid follows through." "She's the one who tells you the truth." "He showed up when nobody else did." Those sentences are your identity. And you write them with behavior, not words.
I learned this from watching my mentors operate. The billionaires I sat with never introduced themselves with their net worth or their title. They didn't need to. Their reputation walked into the room before they did. Every handshake, every kept promise, every moment of integrity when nobody was watching had already done the introduction for them. That's the kind of identity worth building. The kind that speaks before you open your mouth.
1 VOICE
Stephen Covey
"Start with the end in mind."
Covey put this as Habit 2 in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and most people read it as a goal-setting technique. It's deeper than that. He's asking you to decide who you want to be remembered as before you start making decisions about what to do. Because if you don't define your identity on purpose, the world will define it for you. And the world's definition will be based on whatever was most convenient, most visible, or most recent. Not what's most true. Decide first who you are. Then let every decision flow from that. The people who do this build lives that make sense when you look back at them. The people who don't build lives that look like a series of reactions to whatever showed up next.
1 VERSE
Jeremiah 1:5
"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart."
Your identity was established before you had a title, a GPA, a follower count, or a reputation. Before any of the things the world uses to measure you existed, you were already known and already set apart for something. That means the foundation of who you are isn't something you have to build from scratch. It's something you have to uncover. The world will pile a thousand labels on top of it. Your job is to dig down to what was there first.
1 CHALLENGE
Your challenge today —
Write one sentence that starts with "I am the kind of person who..." and finish it with something you want to be true about your character. Not your job. Not your talent. Your character. Then put it somewhere you'll see it every morning this week. On your mirror. On your lock screen. Taped to your dashboard. Let it challenge you every day. Not as an affirmation. As an accountability statement. If the sentence says "I am the kind of person who keeps my word," then you better keep every promise you make this week, even the small ones.
